What to Do in a Dental Emergency

If you do have a dental emergency, Family Dental Care is here to help you. We can offer immediate advice over the phone and will schedule an emergency appointment, often on the same day. Certain dental emergencies do require urgent dental care.

Severe Toothache

You will need emergency dental care if you have a severe toothache that is accompanied by facial swelling or a high fever, or where you have begun to feel very unwell. A bad tooth infection has the potential to become life-threatening so please contact us immediately.

Knocked Out Tooth

If you knock out a tooth, then carefully pick it up by its crown and rinse off any visible dirt. You can store the tooth in a container with a little milk or saliva and bring it with you when you come and see us, or if you feel able, try to reinsert it. Ensure the tooth is facing the right way and hold it in place with a clean finger or carefully bite down on a clean tissue. It is important to come and see us immediately because teeth must be reinserted within the first half an hour to an hour after an accident for any chance of a successful re-implantation. When a child knocks out a baby tooth, please don’t try to reinsert it as you could damage the adult tooth underneath. Instead bring your child to see us straightaway.
