The surfaces of premolars and molars are ideally designed to chew food and have lots of intricate fissures. Unfortunately, these fissures can easily trap food and bacteria, increasing the risk of cavities Fissure sealants are a non-invasive and lower cost way to protect adult back teeth that are free from fillings or cavities, or signs of tooth decay. They cannot be used on teeth that have already been filled or which are decayed.

What Are Fissure Sealants?

Fissure sealants consist of a flowable resin material that is painted onto clean tooth surfaces. It is thin enough to fill in all the fissures and grooves in teeth and it quickly hardens to form a strong, durable and easy-to-clean surface. By completely sealing a clean and healthy tooth surface, it’s possible to prevent tooth decay. Fissure sealants last for several years but can be renewed if they begin to show signs of wear.
