We frequently recommend the application of fissure sealants to children’s adult back teeth. It is important that this treatment is applied soon after these teeth erupt as fissure sealants can only protect teeth that are free from cavities and which do not have any fillings.

Why Have Fissure Sealants?

This treatment is widely used to help prevent cavities in the chewing surfaces of these teeth. These chewing surfaces have many intricate fissures and grooves that are difficult to keep thoroughly clean through brushing. By using fissure sealants, we can create a smooth, easy-to-clean tooth surface.

What are Fissure Sealants?

Treatment is fast and painless. A layer of thin, durable liquid resin material is painted onto the clean chewing surfaces of the premolars and molars. It flows into the fissures and quickly hardens, creating a virtually invisible resin coating that will not interfere with your child’s bite. Fissure sealants last for several years and can be re-applied if necessary.
