Are your wisdom teeth causing a nuisance? Signs they may need removing from our dentist

Although associated with wisdom and coming of age, many dental teams will agree that there is nothing wise about wisdom teeth!dentist-in-doncaster-east

The fourth set of molar teeth which erupt when you are between the ages of 11 and 17, these larger than average teeth can cause an array of issues to your dental health. There are instances in which you may be able to keep them in your mouth without issues occurring with your other teeth, but unfortunately, this is quite rare.

At Family Dental Care, we know all about wisdom teeth and our dentist in Doncaster East will be able to conduct an assessment on these new additions to your mouth should you need them. We know how to spot issues with wisdom teeth before they erupt, using X-Rays and other tests, so we may be able to remove them preventatively if needed. Great stuff!

But what are some of the signs that there may be an issue with your wisdom teeth? Our dentist in Doncaster East reveals some things to look out for.

Inflammation

Inflammation and erupting teeth don’t seem like anything to worry about but if you have persistent inflammation when your wisdom teeth are erupting, you will need to see our dentist in Doncaster East.

Remember, persistent inflammation can lead to blood loss and in some instances, it can allow the gum to become spongy and easier to infiltrate for bacteria and plaque.

Discomfort

Discomfort with erupting teeth is not a new phenomenon, but if you have discomfort relating to your newly erupting teeth that persists long after they have come through, then our team needs to be informed.

If you’re having discomfort with the tooth next to an erupting wisdom tooth, please contact us as this may point to impaction.

Difficulties opening mouth

The underlying cause of difficulties with opening your mouth and wisdom teeth eruption lies in the inflammation of the muscles in the mouth and the tension in the jaw that these teeth can cause.

If you need us to look at your wisdom teeth but can’t open your mouth, our team will do an X-Ray to determine the issue and will probably aim to extract the tooth or teeth.

Infections

If you have had an infection in your mouth, or if there is pus present in or around your erupting wisdom teeth, it’s time to take them out!

Some wisdom teeth can have very long roots, which can intertwine and cause issues with surrounding teeth, so if you are having infections at the eruption site of the teeth, there is the chance that it will spread lower and be more problematic if left untreated.

Offensive odour and taste

In line with recurrent infections due to wisdom teeth is an offensive odour or taste, which does not resolve with brushing or general hygiene.

It may also be due to excess plaque forming around the site of eruption, which could be leading to gum disease. Either way, if you notice this, call our team.
