Are You Brushing Your Teeth Too Hard?

Did you know you can brush your teeth too hard? People often think they need to brush their teeth quite aggressively to get them cleaner and whiter. It’s an approach that is counter-productive and which can damage your teeth and gums.

Brushing too hard can wear away your tooth enamel and your gums, causing gum recession and increased tooth sensitivity. Instead of beautifully white teeth, your teeth may begin to look discoloured because as your enamel thins, it exposes the dentine underneath, and which is naturally a darker colour.

When brushing, choose a soft bristled toothbrush and place it at a 45° angle to your gums so the bristles can reach right down to and just underneath your gum line. Gently clean your teeth using small circular motions, ensuring you clean all tooth surfaces, ensuring you brush for two minutes. If you use an electric toothbrush, allow it to do the work for you.
